Living in this spectacular coastal city, it is a waste not to take advantage of enjoying the natural beauty on offer. You don't need to own a boat to get out on the water.

An excellent and easy day trip is to head to Ettalong by ferry for lunch! Drive to the Palm beach ferry and catch the boat up to the sleep side of the Central Coast. Stunning views past Lion Island put you in the holiday mood before you arrive at the tiny dock.

Stroll up the foreshore and picnic in the waterside park - there are even barbeques if you want to make a big meal of it. The kids can merrily play in the nearby playground or you can all head to the beach, deserted when we were there.

For the less organised, there are many restaurants within walking distance of the ferry stop. If after burgers or fish and chips, you can take your pick of many. We ate at the excellent Coast 175 which had plenty of vegetarian options too. For a more up market dining experience, there is the Box on the Water , a glass structure on the waterfront, with a sophisticated seafood menu.

While away a few hours with the ducks or in the playground, stroll the pretty beach and reserve and then enjoy the leisurely boat trip home. It's a relaxing escape from the city, with minimal effort.

As Hillaire Belloc said "We wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfilment." This is a very simple day trip to do both!
