While midsummer weather's in town for Sydneysiders, a beach day may be sounding a top idea. Sydney is lucky, with the many beautiful beaches in and around the metropolitan area that spoil its residents for choice. One option, that comes with the added bonus of a scenic roadtrip, is Austinmer Beach.

Located close to Wollongong, the beach gives you the chance to escape the hustle and bustle of Sydney suburbia. From Sydney CBD it will take about and hour and half worth of driving via the M1 and Princes Highway. No need to rush though, right?

I recommend leaving early and taking a leisurely drive as you will get to experience the beautiful surrounds of the Grand Pacific Drive. Tour through the Royal National Park, stopping to savour green forest and cliff-top panoramas of the ocean. You'll also see majestic views from Stanwell Tops. Shortly after this, you will hit the famous Seacliff Bridge, which places you between the blue horizon of the ocean and the towering vegetation-coated cliffs of the NSW coastline. This is so picturesque - I feel words don't do it justice.

The Seacliff Bridge will show you a breathtaking part of the NSW coastline.

The relatively small Austinmer Beach is one of the most popular South Coast beaches and is wedged between two tall headlands. A park, abundant in Norfolk pine trees, will sit between you and the 250m of sandy shoreline. We enjoyed a little picnic under one of the pines before hitting the cool and refreshing waves.

At the south end of the beach we also found some rock pools for a splash in calmer waters. Continue right for a scenic walk across rock pools, to see some little sea caves and see the beautiful headlands atop with greenery up close and personal. It was nice to keep our feet cool in the shallow waters during this stroll.

Picturesque scenery by the water!

There are shops and cafes running parallel to the beach. These are quaint, pleasant spots to visit for a feed or refreshing drink. We decided our beach day would not be complete without ice-cream. The corner store helped satisfy the cravings!

Milo ice cream was the perfect end to our stay at Austinmer.

Once we'd had enough sun, sand and surf for the day, we begun our leisurely trip home. Again we were treated to pretty scenery and being summer, this is the perfect time of year to cruise along with tunes and the windows open to allow the breezes to keep you refreshed. The road trip and beaching out, together, make Austinmer a fun day out.
