Join in the colourful Mexican-inspired activities of the Day of the Death Interactive Expo in Brisbane on Saturday 2 November, from 4 to 8 pm at the Coorparoo School of Arts and Memorial Hall .

What is the Day of the Dead?
The Dia de Muertos Expo takes its lead from the cultural traditions of Mexico which celebrate the Day of the Dead Traditionally the three-day "celebration" embraces the memories and lives of those who have passed for a brief reunion that includes food, drink and festivities. It is believed that the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31 and the spirits of children can rejoin their families for 24 hours. The spirits of adults also rejoin on November 2.

At the heart of the tradition, it encourages us not to mourn past loved ones but focuses on gatherings with family and friends to remember those who have died in a bright and lively way.

Sugar skulls, or Calaveras are skull-shaped decorations made from sugar and represent a departed loved one. The skulls are decorated with the person's name and are usually placed on an altar or gravestone as an offering to the spirit of the dead.

How is Day of the Dead different to Halloween?
Halloween has an element of fear to reject and warn about evil spirits whereas the Day of the Dead is full of colour. light and welcoming and returning joy and honouring those lost.
