A year has gone by so quickly, and before we know it, it is again time for Day for Duke, a day to honour our pets and their fight against cancer. According to The Veterinary Cancer Society, at 47%, cancer is the leading cause of death in dogs, especially those over the age of 10. The likelihood of a dog getting cancer is about the same rate as humans - although our pets are generally living longer due to advances in veterinary medicine, and increasingly better education on preventative care for our furbabies, the rate of cancer in dogs has remained more or less the same.
It is for this reason that Day for Duke was organised to raise awareness, and to help raise vital funds for the
Australian Animal Cancer Foundation (AACF), a not-for-profit research charity. In addition to raising vital funds to increase knowledge and expertise in this area, of equal importance is the event's purpose of raising awareness for the prevalence of cancer in our beloved pets, in addition to the importance of early detection of warning signs.
will be held at Brennan Park on Bribie Island, an easy 45-minute drive from Brisbane Airport. Spend the whole day in the picturesque Bribie Island, known as the jewel of the Moreton Bay region! The event will run from 9am to 1pm, but with so much to do in the area, it is definitely worth making it a family day out! The day will be filled with free family friendly events and a range of activities for all, including:
Fun dog competitions
Stalls - including ones which cater specifically for pets
The opportunity to check out some dog obedience schools
Animal rescue groups on site
Food vendors
Raffles with amazing prizes to be won
And much, much more!
Day for Duke started
last year last year, inspired by the passing of and held in commemoration of Dukey, a Labrador cross Maremma Sheepdog, who sadly passed away on April 1st 2016. Furmum Brooke decided to share her story and experience of battling with canine cancer to help raise awareness, and to support others going through similar things. You can follow Dukey's Cause on Facebook under
Dukey's Cause - Animal Cancer Awareness .
There will also be a "Survivor's Parade" at 12pm; an opportunity for both people and pets who have survived cancer to walk together in the fight against cancer.
Eddy, Sam and I will definitely be there this year, and hope to meet some of you there! Together, we can help raise funds and make a difference in the evergoing fight against cancer.
