David Hockney: Current at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV)

If you are concerned your family spends too much time on hand held devices, you might change your mind when you see the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV)'s newest exhibition; David Hockney: Current.

The colourful exhibition by British artist David Hockney, presents art that just so happens to embrace new technologies; the iPad and iPhone.

The 79 year old artist presents some 1200 pieces in the world premiere exhibition, hundreds of which Hockney produced using his mobile device's 'brush app'.

The exhibition is as ground-breaking as it is beautiful, Hockney's Yorkshire landscapes in particular, catch your eye with the addition of such vivid colours that are not usually associated with that region of the world.

You could quite easily while away your morning watching replays of the artist's intricate artwork, mounted on screens throughout the first gallery space, which spring to life stroke after tiny stroke.

Couple that with Hockney's largest ever painting; Bigger Trees Near Warter representing Yorkshire in Winter, which is an awe-inspiring spectacle.

From digital to paint, enter the 60m long gallery space filled with 82 painted portraits of the artist's family, friends and well-known acquaintances, i.e.Barry Humphries, Frank Gehry and John Baldessari.

The immersive room installation 4 Blue Stools is a world premiere in itself, presenting a digitally constructed piece depicting the artist's studio.

Expect to spend some considerable time in the exhibitions finale; a spellbinding video installation called Four Seasons, which illustrates the changing seasons of Yorkshire. Winter, in particular, is the most striking of the four.
