For many of us, David Bowie connotes special meanings and memories. His imagination allowed us escape from the hum-drum and inspired some of our boldest wardrobe choices. His models of expression went through more cycles than a standard wash and encouraged individuality, liberation and diversity. His emotive vocals are that of a friend wanting to share our excitement, soothe our heartbreak and champion our frustration. His catchy and distinct songs are the soundtrack to many moments of our lives. They remind us of people, places and parties, and sometimes, it's the songs that make the moment; transforming chores, familiar actions or lacklustre days into occasions to dance, wildly imagine and emotionally cleanse.

If David Bowie is this to you, why not rally the space cadets and join like-minded friends-you-haven't-met-yet at an honorary dance party? Brisbane events coordinator and retro buff Kristian Fletcher presents at Basement 243 in Fortitude Valley, October 8.

The rock, pop and power ballad variety to Bowie's palette combined with a younger generation of listeners discovering the timelessness of his music today (myself included), should see a d-floor filled with fans from all walks of life. To add to the eclecticism, you're invited to dress as your favourite Bowie look which may include: Major Tom, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Thin White Duke, Halloween Jack, even Labyrinth Bowie. Collectively, it should be an awesome shift in time and dimension. There's a licensed bar and a DJ playing Bowie classics until midnight, when general dance music will resume. If you're anything like me and my friends, you'll reward yourselves at the end of the night with a soft serve from McDonalds and continue to sing all the way home.

Past Kristian Fletcher events have included Madonna and Kate Bush Nights, HOLE lotta GARBAGE: a 90s Girl Rocky Party, and a Little Shop of Horrors Floorshow. Be sure to check out upcoming events: "When Animals Attack" movie double featuring Giant Spider Invasion / Sssssss! (Sept 28); free screening of kids' classics Bedknobs & Broomsticks (Sep 29) and Dark Crystal (Sep 30) in Brisbane Square; ABBA Tribute Cabaret (Oct 2); Rock n ROLL 50/60s Cabaret (Nov 13); regular Weird Wednesday Cult Flicks at Tribal Theatre as well as Rocky Horror Picture Show Floorshows.
