I'm not a big laugh out loud type, I'm more of the 'yeah I know it's funny but I'll laugh on the inside thanks' girl, except when it comes to Dave Hughes. Even if I tried I couldn't keep those laughs down and before long I'm crying from laughing so much!

He is staunchly proud of being born and bred in Warrnambool, with the give away country intonation. He drops his 'gs' at the end of all words that are supposed to be ending with g and he sprinkles every second sentence with the 'f ' word. These are two of my pet hates and yet I am addicted to his radio persona.

His almost child like self centred view of how the world works – like his – is proven wrong many times over by adoring listeners. Dave invariably draws attention to your weaknesses, vulnerabilities and weird habits mirrored in people from every walk of life. Dave makes you laugh at yourself, at him and others. Somehow he does this in a way that could be affronting if delivered from any other person.

It seems unfathomable that I could learn lessons about life from Dave Hughes and yet this is exactly what happens.

Don't be deceived by his apparent 'slow wit' he is lightning fast when it comes to identifying and illuminating the humour in every context. He seizes the opportunity in the most unlikely places and conversations. This is Dave's fine tuned skill that ensures each stand up will no doubt be fresh and original.

After twelve years of being in the radio saddle with Kate Langbroek, they are hanging up their hat and Dave is hitting the stand up road.

I admit I am a veteran of Nova and am going to find it hard trying to accustomise myself to a new radio broadcaster. Driving to work will never be the same. At the risk of getting sentimental, in the thirteen years at Nova, Dave has married and had three children; Kate has become a mother four times. I have adopted two and divorced. They draw upon the trials and tribulations of parenthood, using humour to normalise the agonies and irony related to children and childhood experiences.

Watch out for Dave as he enters his new life chapter and plunges all his listeners unwillingly into their new phase of life. The point is Dave Hughes is brilliant in an understated way and I can't wait to see his new show 'Pointless'.

Hughsey stars in his new stand up show every night at the Comedy Company from March 25 – April 6. Book early.
