The re-vamping of an old pub in an historical building in Mona Vale proves to be the perfect setting for this Austrian "Bierhaus". Sitting on Pittwater Road, Mona Vale, Das Bierhaus occupies the old "Rock Lily" pub site, which was established in 1886. I must say, the architecture lends itself very well to this Austrian Bierhaus and owner Stefan Thomaschuetz, who took over the premises almost one year ago, transformed the dark pub style interiors and instilled a traditional Austrian vibe to the place. From dark, it became light, with a distinct family friendly atmosphere and slight kitschy feel, you just know you are in for a good feed and some really great beer.

Our waiter Andreas was both a character, and "in" character. Wearing a traditional Austrian outfit, he was informative and helpful with our menu choices. We started off with a traditional Austrian starter, a dish that apparently hails from owner Stefan's home town and is called Kartner Fleischnudel. It is minced beef filled Dumplings with Sauerkraut and crispy Speck. I could have eaten loads of these, the pastry was firm, the filling tasty, the sauerkraut a nice contrast to the meaty filling and the crispy speck addictive (like a bowl of peanuts). We also tried the Bretzn, a freshly baked pretzel with butter. Served hot with salt crystals on top, the butter balanced the saltiness. Delicious.

[BREAK]

For mains, my partner went for the Rinder fillet steak (Beef Eye Fillet steak served with roast potato, green peppercorn sauce and vegetables). Considering you usually pay $40 and over for a small eye fillet in most places, this one was big, juicy and tender, cooked as ordered and at $32.90, somewhat of a bargain. My meat eater was happy.

I chose the Gerostete Sweinshaxen - Half A Haxn (Roasted Pork Knuckle served with Sauerkraut and mash potato). Made crispy on the outside by their pizza oven, it was tender and juicy on the inside and served on a bed of sauerkraut, mash and a side of salad. It was quite large, and, at $28.90 for the "half", I can only imagine how big the "whole" one is at $32.90. Bring your appetite.

For dessert we tried the Apfelstrudel (apple strudel with creme) and Eis Palatschinken (thin pancakes with ice cream and chocolate sauce). There are 7 desserts to choose from between $9.90 and $14.90, big enough to share, or enjoy on your own.

KIDS MENU**

BEERS AND WINES
I tried the special "Austrian wine of the month", not sure whether i've ever had an Austrian wine before but it was nice and, at $39 a bottle, good value. You can order your beers in 300ml, 500ml or 1 litre glasses with a good selection of Beers on Tap (Bitburger, Erdinger Hefe, Koestritzer Dunkel and Trumer Pils) as well as Mixed beers and Bottled Beers (Stiegl Lager, Hofbrau Original Lager, Franziskaner, Schofferhofer, Erdinger and Clausthaler Alc Frei).
