Home to over 400 species of birds, Darwin is a paradise for bird watchers. Darwin has a mosaic of habitats including mangrove-lined creeks, billabongs, savannah woodlands and seasonal wetlands that nurture diverse migratory and endemic species. The best time to see birds in Darwin is between July to November.



You don't have to go far to see these beautiful creatures. You can find amazing birds, even around famous tourist sites in Darwin, such as the Deckchair Cinema and Darwin City Esplanade .



George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens , East Point Reserve , Casuarina Coastal Reserve (from Dripstone Cliffs to Lee point or from Lee Point to Buffalo Creek) are some places to start within driving distance from Darwin CBD. You can find Forest Kingfisher, Rainbow Pitta, Crismson Finch or Chestnut Rail.





Visit Knuckey Lagoons Conservation Reserve for some migratory birds from the beginning of the wet season. Royal Spoonbill, Red-kneed Dotterel and Black-winged Stilt are among so many birds that you can spot here.



If you want to combine bird watching with a picnic and the beautiful scenery of sea, Nightcliff Foreshore is the place to go. Just 12km from the City, this place is a good spot for shore birds. Osprey, Masked Finch and Long-tailed Finched can be found here.



If you are willing to drive a bit further, you can find another bird paradise at Howard Springs Nature Park and Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve . Don't forget Kakadu, this is a must go place for bird lovers in the Northern Territory. Litchfield, Mary River, and even Tiwi Island can also be put on your itinerary for your next bird watching schedule.







Remember to keep to the marked tracks and obey all signage. Try not to disturb or feed any of wildlife. Bring plenty of water, wear appropriate clothes and apply some sunscreen and insect repellant.
