Darryl popped out from behind some pots as we wandered into the nursery in Montville. The sign we were following was "Flowering Orchids" which we saw at the side of the road. We had taken a wrong turn but this sign made us carry on. We didn't really know what to expect but Darryl's welcoming remark opened up a floodgate of information and useful facts about all things to do with orchids.
He has been working with orchids since he was 13. That was 40 years ago. He had a number of good people around him to learn all the details from, and now he manages a commercial nursery for the most beautiful flowers perhaps on the planet. He has the most in-depth and relevant knowledge you could ever wish for and he imparts it free of cost to anyone who has an interest in this special flowering family.
He is very happy to give you the exact advice you might be needing after you failed to get a flower from a shop-bought orchid after the first flowering. There were valuable tips I picked up as I listened which were so useful for the re-potting and watering of the plants, let alone the types that are good for Queensland and the mistakes people make in their care of orchids.
The colours are as varied as the flowers and the types available. Go along and enjoy this in-depth experience - I should add that he has many bromeliads as well as pitcher plants. The latest wild weather did some damage so there will be many an hour spent putting them back right before they can be put back on display. We were thrilled to have met him at this unexpected "turn" in our day.
Darryl is more than happy to answer specific questions and requests. He has a Facebook page.
