Tennis is an exhilarating, heart pumping exercise. From the Australian Open to Wimbledon, the sport captures the heart of youngsters and the thrill-seeking individuals of all ages.
Let's say you are in for a recreational hit with your friends. Your nearest tennis court is a ten minute drive. You called the day before. The hire of the court alone costs you $20 an hour. Your friends are reluctant to come the distance.
[ADVERT]Now all these problems could be solved by a simple solution. Rest assured, I am not advocating more funds into the sport. The inner west hosts a limited supply of tennis courts, notably two in Burwood Park. On my nightly strolls, I see the two tennis courts dark and locked.
I think to myself, if only I could break that barrier. And thus, some internet research has led me to find a free tennis court in Sydney. Yes, it exists.
The one I am referring to is conveniently located off Summer Hill Station. But a problem arises. One early morning, I picked up my car keys at 7am, rang up a friend who happened to be awake (to my surprise) and asked her to join me at the courts.
Of course, I expected them to be empty on a cloudy autumn day. To my disappointment, if you have not guessed already, they were both occupied.
Despite being half awake and disgruntled, my friend and I decided to wait. The park was comforting, it was simple with a children's playground and a short skate area.
Though the wait was long, I realised I had stumbled upon a quiet getaway set amid rapid traffic and the bustle of city life.
If you happen to press pause on your way home or fancy throwing a tennis ball like I do, come to Darrel Jackson Gardens.
