Sitting in the dark....

A man at the back of the theatre started talking loudly and for a moment ,you wonder if he's fed up of waiting, then, stylishly dressed, with a deep resonant voice, Kenneth Slessor (Sean O'Shea) steps out of time and wistfully laments and weaves his Darlinghurst Nights tale around us and realisation strikes that he's central to the play (starring Baylie Carson,
Andrew Cutcliffe, Natalie Gamsu, Abe Mitchell, Billie Rose Prichard, Sean O'Shea and Justin Smith).

The musical ensemble, actors and singers quickly bring this production to life. Telling a gritty and brilliantly woven tale of lives merging, ebbing and flowing as Kings Cross lives and breathes around them during the 1920's and 30's.

This 30-year-old musical has been recreated by Katherine Thomson, (original concept by Andrew James), music has been brilliantly pieced together by Max Lambert and the cast expertly offers a production addressing an era of desperation, corruption, cruelty, unrequited love and loss, a time where strength and determination prevailed, reminding us time and tide waits for no man.

Set in Sydney's Kings Cross/Darlinghurst, the diversity and everyday struggles of these Kings Cross/Potts Point residents seem to not differ greatly from those alive today. Showing us a tight, deep-rooted community of people striving to do their best existed there. Most of whom, wouldn't choose to live anywhere else.

The music is clever and brilliantly delivered, the singling, (of which I wish there had been more), drops you straight into the era with seamless effort.

Perhaps in those days Kings Cross was even more vibrant, more rugged, more real – without the stringent laws which have changed it so immensely from what and who it was.

It's a privilege to be given a glimpse into the past, akin to being A Christmas Carol of Kings Cross and this production does it well at the lovely Hayes Theatre an apt and delightful venue.

Steller performances and music which ferries us through the journey of love, lost fortunes and a Kings Cross fighting to stay with us well into the future. Darlinghurst Nights is vibrant and real.
