As the weather heats up, so will the Darling Harbour foreshore with the sounds, smells and excitement of Latin America when the annual Darling Harbour Fiesta festival kicks off in October.

Running since 1993, Fiesta is Australia's biggest and free celebration of Latin American culture which allows visitors to immerse themselves in the cuisine, in the music and, of course, in the dance! You can feast on some enchiladas whilst watching live performances by headline international acts, then get your own groove on and participate in the dance classes.

Spread over two exciting days, the main Fiesta festival will feature a myriad of live performances across three venues in Darling Harbour. These will be on Saturday 12 October from 12pm to 10pm, and then again, on Sunday 13 October from 12pm to 6pm.

Playing on centre stage in Tumbalong Park, headlining acts will include the following (click on the artist's name for a taster of their music on Youtube):
Quique Neira , a Latin reggae icon from Chile
Kevin Johansen , an Argentine-American known for his catchy bilingual alternative rock music and Sistema Criolina , who will be sure to bring some hot Brazilian vibes to the harbour.

If that's not enough to get you into the salsa spirit, then the parade on the Saturday night will definitely do the trick! The parade was a spectacular, colourful extravaganza last year and I'm sure this year will be even bigger and better. Picture a Carnivale-style parade that features giant puppets, red-hot salsa amd samba dancers, capoeira performers, batucada drummers and incredible costumed characters snaking their way through Darling Harbour. Be there at 7pm on Saturday, 12 October, to see it all!

Adding a bit of spice to the festival, various Latin American and Spanish food stalls will be serving up a smorgasbord of churros, paella, tacos, enchiladas, Argentinean alfajore cookies and much, much more. These can be found on the grassed area of Tumbalong Park.

Cha cha your way towards the open-air dance stage at the Harbourside Amphitheatre where you will be able to see Latin dance stars tear up the floor as well as find your own rhythm. You may even pick up an array of hip-shaking dance moves at the learn-to-salsa classes.

The third venue, Palm Grove, will allow festival attendees to take a break from the salsa dancing and watch more intimate performances by the water. A mix of traditional and modern Latin American craft stalls will also be found here offering an exquisite selection of Inca jewellery, fabric and artworks.

All in all, save the dates for this weekend (12-13 October) and immerse yourself in some Latin American culture. Who needs to go to Rio anyway?

More Fiesta fun!
Indeed, the Fiesta continues. Throughout the month of October, pop into participating Darling Harbour restaurants, bars and entertainment venues as they will be offering Latin American-inspired specials.

Also, for those who can't make the main festival weekend, Fiesta nights will be held on Friday 18 and 25 October as well as Saturday 19 and 26 October, from 7pm-9pm. This will feature a host of Latin American performance groups and interactive Brazilian acts at Harbourside, Cockle Bay and The Village Green at Darling Quarter.

Little tidbits to keep in mind:
The parking around Darling Harbour can be expensive and, especially during a festival, very limited so taking public transport is strongly advised.
