Is it possible that vampires do exist?
Welcome to the shadowed nights of Caldwell, New York. Here you'll find drug dealer, prostitutes and the homeless. It's also the stage of a deadly war between a group of elite warrior vampires and their mortal enemy, known as the Lessening Society. These elite vampires are known as the Black Dagger Brotherhood, the defenders of their race, they are blessed with the ability to heal quickly and have even quicker fighting reflexes.
Dark Lover is the first novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, written by JR Ward. It focuses on the story of Wrath, the only pure bred vampire left on the planet. His parents were killed by the lessening society centuries ago, and his passion for vengeance drives him to kill his enemy. Wrath is also the born king of the vampires, a title he does not wish to have. He would much rather be out fighting alongside his 'brothers', then sitting behind a desk pushing papers. the other extraordinary thing about Wrath is that he's all but blind, although this doesn't hamper his fighting. In fact he's faster than most of the others, if not all of them.
Dark Lover revels that the Black Dagger Brotherhood is down to only seven members. At one time their numbers swelled well past twenty. However now there is only Wrath, followed by Tohrment, a quiet killer happily married and expecting his first child, Rhage, also known as Hollywood, is a vampire cursed for crossing the wrong person, Vishous, all I will say is you never want to meet him without his driving glove on, Phury, who has a head f long golden hair any woman would kill for, his twin Zsadist, a vampire scared both inside and out and Darius, the most civilised of them all, being more comfortable around his paintings and antiques then fighting. This number is quickly cut to just six, when one of these fighters is killed, and now Wrath is left to fullfill his friends dying wish.
The orphaned half breed, Beth Randall, is totally unaware of the heritage running in her veins. She is around the age where if she is going to transition into a vampire, she need the blood of a male to help her through it. Wrath has every intention of finding Beth, and if she is to transition, to hand her to one of his 'brothers' to help her through the change. Problem is, he didn't bank on falling in love. Adding to Wrath's problems is Butch O'Neal, a human detective with a thing for Beth.
When Beth's transition does hit, she's alone in her own home, having decided that it would be better to stay away from Wrath and his crazy stories about vampire, with only her cat Boo to hear her pain. Butch comes around to check on Beth to find her on the floor. Fearing the worst, he breaks in to find her close to death. Beth demands that Butch take her to Wrath, but will he get her there in time? And if he does, what will the vampires do with him?
Dark Lover is an exciting and interesting read. Full of fight scenes that even reading them will make your head spin, and love scenes that will make you hot under the collar. You will find this book hard to put down. But be warned, this is book one of the series and book twelve is due to be released in March 2013.
