It is often said that the journey is as interesting as the destination. The journey to The Dark Horse is. Whether you come from Yarra Glen, Eltham or Warrandyte, it is a picturesque drive with some beautiful scenery.
The Dark Horse is a café, wine and produce store.
The café is open for breakfast and lunch and their menu should cater for all tastes.
I called in for my favourite morning tea of coffee and a toasted bacon sandwich. It was up to my high standards with the coffee hot and the bacon crispy and well-buttered toast.
The café is licenced and is also a bottle shop selling many locally sourced wines. Rob Dolan wines from Warrandyte is a featured winery.
The dining area is on two sides in an enclosed veranda which gives a very bright and airy ambience. The widely spaced tables adds to that ambience.
The produce section is well stocked with a large range of local gourmet products, such as mustards, sauces and preserves.
At the rear is a courtyard with several tables overlooking bushland and a small lake, giving a very pleasant view to enjoy your meal or coffee and cake.
On occasions, live music is a featured. Takeaway food and coffee is always available. There is also ample parking.
If you are driving along the Yarra Glen- Eltham Road and the hungrys hit, The Dark Horse is almost an oasis in the wilderness.
Nearby, on the Yarra Glen side is the Gawa Wurundjeri Resource Walk, a short walk illustrating the life of the Wurundjeri People, the original inhabitants.
On the Eltham side is the Kangaroo Ground Memorial Tower in memory of World War One soldiers from the area. The tower offers 360 degree views.
The area could be a day's outing.
