It really pays to keep in touch with your local Council's event calendar for ongoing events throughout the year, and generally, the best part is that most of them are free. Here are a few presented by Darebin Libraries for the month of August 2024. First up on the
Thursday 1 August 7-8pmAEST is
First Thursday Book Nook at Preston Library, 266 Gower St, Preston. A free event,
click here to reserve your spot. Run monthly, this is the last date thus far, for the year. It's a relaxed book chat event where you connect with other people through friendly conversation and a mutual love of words. They'd love to hear what you've been reading - be it a book, a poem, an audiobook, or even a magazine article. Turn solitary reading into a shared experience. Refreshments provided.
Device Advice is also a free event where you can book a one-on-one Device Advice session, and have your tricky tech questions answered by a friendly digital team. Learn how to download an app, attach documents and photos to an email, use the library’s digital resources and more. Help is also available for basic troubleshooting and set-up of your mobile devices.

Protecting Darebin Creek Wildlife is for those who want to learn about the fauna found along the creek, and the everyday actions you can take to support it. Peter Grenfell from the Darebin Creek Management Committee will talk about some of the wildlife found along the creek, such as Krefft’s (sugar) gliders, tawny frogmouths, short-finned eels, platypus and microbats. Come along on
Thursday 8 August 2024 from 7-8pm at Preston Library as above, to learn about the simple things you can do to help these species. Be sure to book your free spot

There's no need to craft alone when you join
In the Loop at Preston Library, 266 Gower Street, Preston. There are two dates -
9 and 23 Aug with sessions starting at
11am and they are free to attend. Just book your free spot
here . Bring whatever craft you're working on and share creative inspiration with crafty others. It's a great way to meet people at this event that's held fortnightly on Friday mornings.
Book Week Storytime is suited for kids aged 2-5 and will be held on
Fri 23 Aug 11.15am-12pm at Reservoir Library, 23 Edwardes St, Reservoir.
Book here to reserve your spot at this free event. Kids can dress up as their favourite book character, listen to books from the Children's Book Council Awards' shortlist and finish with a fun craft activity.
