Atif Badria, master Arabic percussionist will be teaching an exclusive 3 hour workshop on darbuka drumming on April 23rd at Amera's Palace in Marrickville.

Atif Badria is an extraordinary Syrian-born percussionist who specialises in Darbuka, an original Middle Eastern percussion instrument with a single membrane and a goblet-shaped body.

Atif started drumming intuitively from the tender age of four. Completely self-taught, he started working as a full-time professional musician at the age of 15, later playing with renowned Syrian composers Hadi Bakdounis and Sobhi Jarour. Atif currently teaches weekly Darbuka drumming classes at the Redfern Community Centre .

This workshop serves as an introduction to not only darbuka playing but to Middle Eastern music as a whole. Darbuka is considered the backbone of Middle Eastern music, and this is a wonderful way to explore its many rhythms.

Atif will teach students how to incorporate two different rhythms at the same speed. It will also focus on how to go back to the main rhythm while applying a technique. Students will also be introduced to some Muwashahat rhythms.

The workshop is suitable for beginners & intermediate levels of all age. It will be fun with a simple approach to make it easy for students to absorb rhythms and techniques.

It is also a great way to meet other drummers and get a taste of this unique drum. If you like it, then you can pursue with regular lessons at Atif's weekly class.

Having personally attended one of Atif's classes, I can attest to his excellent teaching style and fun community vibe that happens in the workshop.

Go here to book your space now and enjoy a delicious morning tea and light lunch. If you have a darbuka drum please bring one, and there will be extras on hand as well.
