Even though it first opened its doors at the beginning of October, Daniel San Chow Down Bar and Beach Side Dojo decided to wait for a monumental occasion to coincide with their launch party. That opportunity presented itself at the end of the month, with Halloween landing on Friday the 31st of October.
To coin a phrase from the real estate industry – 'location, location, location.' Daniel San is one of the newest bars in Manly and is situated on N Steyne Road, with a picturesque view out to the east of Manly Beach and the esplanade.
Daniel San went all out with its opening gala - rest assured no stone was left unturned. The Halloween Launch party was an RSVP only event and was standing room only. Guests were welcomed with a complimentary drink of Halloween punch, served straight from a clear skull bottle to add that extra touch of authenticity. The decorations scattered throughout the bar were most impressive. From the cobwebs adorned on top of the bar to the 'body' bags hanging out near the pinball machines. Whoever was in charge of setting the atmosphere for the night definitely earned their paycheck for the week.
The staff really rose to the occasion as well with an amazing array of outfits. Zombie Geishas and pirates made their way through the masses offering tofu and avocado steamed buns, California rolls, soba noodles and chicken katsu curry bowls. All of the food was fresh and appetizing, not to mention there was certainly no shortage of platters making their way out from the kitchen!

Outside of the launch party, Daniel San boasts a very Japanese Izakaya style menu, fitting in perfectly with the theme. In Japan, Izakaya's are known as casual drinking establishments serving food to accompany their beverages. Daniel San's menu is bursting with options such as sashimi, salads, chicken karrage, soft shell crab and an assortment of skewers to satisfy every appetite. Behind the bar is a good selection of beers (both on tap and in bottle) along with almost any spirit you can poke a 'chopstick' at – including a range of Japanese whiskies. Given that one of their specials on launch night was the house sake, rest assured you'll be able to venture here for your sake fix (served hot or cold of course!)
All in all, Daniel San presents itself as a fabulous seaside bar and an almost certain sure fire destination on a sunny day or afternoon. Probably the only criticism that could be said about the launch party is that it was held at night so patrons didn't get to enjoy the amazing view that is on offer during the daylight hours!
