While the Dandenong Market isn't as large as Victoria Market, it is quite literally stunning in its cultural diversity.
Inside, and outside in surrounding streets, are a wide range of Middle Eastern and Indian food stores and a large number of other ethnic groups, are reflected in the vibrant and colourful atmosphere which will take you from the "Mekong and Ganges to the Murray-Darling and Niger."
In fact, suffice to say, the 'Dandy Market' as the locals call it is in the centre of one of the most culturally diverse communities in Australia.
While this multiculturalism and ethnicity is always on show it is particularly showcased in a forthcoming event— the held on 1 March 2015.
As the name suggests this is a world food extravaganza with sumptuous and exotic dishes from a number of local restaurants, multicultural food vans and market traders.
There will be a pop-up outdoor food bazaar, like an overseas hawkers' market with sizzling hot plates, fiery ovens and steaming curries. You could try some Lebanese pizzas a freshly-made authentic Turkish Gozleme, Kransky sausages and Serbian burkes, Singaporean-style satays, baklava, international pies and shish kebabs, and traditional tea from Afghan Tea Cart. There is a wonderful story about how Aslam Akram started his tea cart
here.
Last year celebrity foodie Matt Preston named the as his pick of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.
Tasting plates are as low as $5. There will also be lots of live cooking demonstrations of various ethnic dishes with free tastings at the end.
There will be day full of entertainment for the entire family. Dance troupes range from Bollywood to flamenco.
Kids can enjoy craft workshops and face painting.
But what will be great for those of us who are less familiar with the Dandenong Market are the free discovery tours that will be running throughout the day.
I recently did an Indian cookery class by
Foodie Trails which alerted me to just how much is going on in this area. It is great to appreciate, enjoy and share out ethnic diversity and food is one of the best places to start.
PARKING
Parking is free on Sundays and there are a 1000 parking spaces, with many undercover spots,
There is also parking available in other nearby carparks, all of which are just a short walk from the Market.
There is also a courtesy bus from the station which is 15 minutes walk away.
