Great family fun not to be missed
Dandenong Agricultural Show is a great family friendly day out full of fun activities, displays, competitions, rides and best of all lots of cute animals.
With a full two day program with many events you will be kept thoroughly entertained, not to mention the fireworks display on the Saturday night.
The competition in the horse ring is fierce as everyone battles it out to gain qualifications into the Royal Shows around Australia and the Victorian Horse of the Year Competition at Werribee in 2014. The great thing about Dandenong Show is that it's one a few left to have so many horse events (687 events, excluding show jumping). On Saturday the All Breed Horses will be in competition, including Welsh ponies, Stock horses, Palominos, Arabs, along with many other breeds. On Sunday there is a three ring Open Breed competition covering Hacks, Galloways and Ponies.
Other horse events include: Light harness horses, fun ring, led events and one of the most popular with spectators is the show jumping which is held over both days of the show.
Art and craft competitions are a favourite amongst most of the show goers and competition is usually of a high standard. One of the favourite sections is the cookery competition which sees entrants produce their finest lamingtons, yo yoes, scones, sponges, jams and preserves, along with the very intricate cake decorating section.
The student and school section is growing in popularity each year and it's always interesting to see some of the ideas they have come up with for their entries.
Not forgetting: calligraphy, ceramics, porcelain dolls, oil and acrylic paintings, photography, hand spinning and weaving along with any other arts and crafts I may have missed.
A crowd favourite with the men and young children alike is the truck pull, which will be held on Saturday at 7:45pm. The truck pull is raising funds for Beyond Blue, with teams of ten paying an entry fee to pull the truck 50 metres. A great cause to get involved with.
Of course a show wouldn't be a show without: rides, show bags, motorcycle stunt displays, gum boot throws, dog fly-ball, roving entertainers, food stalls (including dagwood dogs and fairy floss), balloon twisting, stockmans challenge and the great $1,000 grocery give away and much more.
Car enthusiasts will be well catered for with the Classic and Hot Rod club of Victoria's Show and Shine competition, which is on the Sunday and will feature live music. Also on the Sunday look out for the Hot Saw competition and the sheep dog demonstration.
Another fun event will be the battle of the bands which will include the Victorian Police Show Band.
No agricultural show is complete without a vast array of animals competing for the blue ribbons. Expect to see beef and dairy cattle, black and coloured sheep, dairy goats, poultry, rabbits, pigeons and perhaps even some alpacas.
