Rich ice cream straight from the factory
Enjoy hearty fresh ice cream straight from the factory at Dairy Bell. Perhaps best recognised from their supermarket stocked tubs of ice cream, Dairy Bell has their own outlets where they serve old favourites alongside new flavours they are trialling. Long a favourite among Melburnians, Dairy Bell has won countless awards for their scrumptious ice cream.
There are a smattering of Dairy Bell stores in Melbourne, but for an extra nostalgic ice cream visit the Malvern East store which is connected to the factory. The second you walk in, you'll notice that the smell of ice-cream dominates the store.
There is a downside to their popularity, however- they often run out of flavours, and it's always the flavour that you want. The first time I went there, they had 'just run out' of my first, second and third flavour preferences.
Particularly on hot days, the Dairy Bell store is always busy and there are usually plenty of children nagging their parents for particular desserts. Fortunately there are always a few staff on duty and service is quick.
You can devour your ice cream inside the store, or venture outside to a secluded, shady garden area. With white cast iron chairs, benches and tables, the area is quaint although in a state of slight disrepair. You might also want to watch out for the birds inhabiting the courtyard's trees, which may try to sneak a little extra 'topping' onto your ice cream!

I ordered a banana split, which at $7.50 includes three flavours of ice cream from their menu and an entire banana. Sadly, it was impossible to finish. While there is nothing to set apart Dairy Bell from other ice creameries, their ice cream is always smooth and sweet with generous serving sizes. Certainly worth a visit if you're in the area.
Gotta love Dairy Bell. We go to the Bundoora store. Always get something nice and yummy. The baby-size cone is enough for me. My daughter gets through the kid-size one. They do a roaring trade in banana splits. And it's open till 11ish. It's cheap too. As long as you're not wanting something exotic like lychee/ pistachio/green tea you will be happy.
