Are you tired of your weekends following that same old routine: sport, shopping, cleaning and cooking? Do you long to escape to the country (if only for the morning) to soak in those blue open skies? Or perhaps, you're looking for a unique place to celebrate a special occasion? We ticked all of those boxes and headed out to Woodman Estate to relax over a long, country style, gourmet breakfast.

The new Morninton Peninsula Freeway has significantly opened up this region to those of us, living in Melbourne. In less than 30 minutes, we were surrounded by green hills and country cottages and soon after, we were driving through the Estate's gates.

The driveway, bordered by trees, dressed in bright autumn colours, winds past lakeside chalets and through a country garden, brimming with roses and cottage flowers. Within minutes, we were seated in the formal dining room, overlooking the private lake and gardens.

It really is the perfect start to the day and felt a million miles from anywhere. As we sipped on cappuccinos, our waitress walked us through the buffet offerings, which included a range of freshly squeezed juices, fruit platters, a selection of homemade muffins, pastries and breads plus a variety of cereals.

We decided to start with freshly squeezed juices and a delicious berry trifle - creamy yoghurt, granola and a raspberry compote. By now, we were quite hungry and the smell of bacon cooking, made the hot menu selections, even more tempting. Perhaps it was the ambience of the formal dining room, but we couldn't go past the Traditional English Breakfast - eggs (cooked any way you choose) with a variety of side dishes (grilled bacon, mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes, hash browns and sausages) served on ciabatta toast.

As the chef is French, it's also worth asking for a taste of his authentic hollandaise sauce on the side. The menu also included favourites such as Eggs Benedict, Eggs Florentine and omelettes, as well as French toast and house specials. We weren't disappointed with our choice.

Between us, we tried scrambled and poached eggs, all cooked perfectly. Homemade hash browns were a hit with our daughters! The hot breakfast was well portioned, so we could indulge without feeling uncomfortable. A pot of tea finished the meal perfectly, giving us the opportunity to linger at the table, reading the newspapers and taking in the view of the lake, now alive with birdlife.

French doors lead out into the garden and so, as suggested, after breakfast we explored the expansive gardens and walked around the lake. Woodman Estate - Luxury Country Hotel, Restaurant & Spa offers a gourmet breakfast, every day between 8.30am and 11.00am as well as lunch, evening meals and high teas and more. Bookings are essential and gift vouchers are also available.

The cost of the breakfast is $37.50 per person/$19.50 for children under 12 years of age. A peaceful atmosphere, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Perfect food and the chance to linger for the morning and explore a country garden. What are you waiting for? We are already planning our return.
