An indie pop Kiwi production of
Bullet Heart Club,
Daffodils is a story of love and loss in the land of the long white cloud. The bittersweet love story is played out to a live soundtrack of some of New Zealand's greatest hits.
The playwright
Rochelle Bright has written a deeply personal story inspired by the love stories of her parents and grandparents. The actors address the audience rather than the other.
Rose and
Eric do not look at or touch the other; their mutual love is exhibited via words and music.
Great music and powerful vocals add texture and dimension to the poignant performances of
Colleen Davis and
Todd Emerson as
Rose and
Eric. Video, family photographs, home movie footage and excerpts from love letters add to the realism of the story.
Fancy sets, costumes and even shoes are unecessary as props, the actors and musicians transport you into the story of
Rose &
Eric. At times you feel like you are an intruder in their lives and you can see that much of the story's conflict arises from misunderstandings and a lack of communication.
Daffodils is truly entertaining and deeply moving. I left the theatre affected and wanting more.
Bullet Heart Club has managed to create a lasting legacy of the
Bright family mythology.
