The event begins with the Dog's Breakfast event at 9.15 am. All dog breeds are welcome to join the fun at the Village Green, which will have an on-theme sausage sizzle, coffee trucks, and the annual photos of dogs and their owners.
Come around 10.00 am, walk down Sackville Street to the cricket oval where the main event will take place. There you can watch The Dog Parade where those entering this competition will be able to have a warm up. Then there are those of us who just want to look and get some great photos of the day's canine competitors.
And finally, just sit back and watch those tiny legs go ninety to the dozen! The main races will feature dogs under and over two years old, and a veterans' race.
If you want to bring your dachshund to go in the race, the registration costs $15 and it is open until 9.30 am on the day of the races. All dogs must be registered online via the festival website one week before race day. No registrations will be accepted on race day.
There will also be an all breeds race so that any breed can also get the chance to race and have fun. At the last Dachshund Dash, there was a greyhound entered in this race - organisers thought this was just a bit unfair! Think of the difference in the size of their legs, let alone the fact that greyhounds are one of the fastest dogs alive!
Apparently, the locals call this main race "the Melbourne Cup of dog racing".
Nowadays there are generally about 100 competitive dogs who are madly running, leaping, or sniffing about at the finish line. Come along and egg on these little characters, most of whom have more heart than a sense of direction. Watch as their owners try enthusiastically to make their dogs run, and win the crown of glory.
The actual categories include:
Under 2 years
Over 2 years
Novelty events including best dressed
There will be a BBQ, coffee cart, expert race-calling and more!
