While I've always been a fan of Shakespeare, I'd never actually heard of the play
Cymbeline before. Having now experienced it in theatre, I have to say I'm surprised that it isn't more famous. Like other Shakespearean works,
Cymbeline is full of betrayal, intrigue, and murder plots, whilst also featuring true love and a cameo from ghosts.
Directed by Sean O'Riordan, and brought to life by the Secret House theatre company,
Cymbeline tells the story of Imogen, a British princess, and her struggle to survive as her stepmother, servants, and husband all begin to plot against her. Add the threat of war against the Roman Empire, long-lost relatives, and various plots of revenge, and we have a riveting, action-packed story. I particularly liked the energy and passion the cast brings to this show. What makes this performance even more interesting is that the director has cast females in traditionally-male roles, offering a new perspective on the play.
Cymbeline will be performed at the Depot Theatre from the 5th to the 15th October. Tickets start at $22 for students, and $32 for adults. While the play is very entertaining, I'd recommend it more for adults, as the wit and humour may be lost on a younger audience. With enough drama to rival a soap-opera,
Cymbeline is a must-see this week.
