Cylinder Beach on Minjerribah / North Stradbroke Island

Cylinder Beach on Minjerribah / North Stradbroke Island, voted Queensland's best beach in 2018 and 2019, is just a short ferry trip from Brisbane.



This beautiful beach is spectacular at any time, but especially on days when the wind is from the south. On such days, the swimming area is protected by a rocky headland, leaving stunning swimming conditions.



Cylinder Beach is patrolled by the Point Lookout Surf Life Saving Club. However, unlike Main Beach, no pet dogs are allowed on Cylinder Beach. One of the great attractions of Cylinder Beach is the large lagoon that often forms right the way along it. This provides sheltered swimming for young children, with the clean, shallow water inside it often warmed up by the sun.



The waters around Cylinder Beach team with marine life. The headland is an excellent place to watch for this, and includes land-based whale watching in season (from June to October) when humpback whales migrate between Antarctica and Hervey Bay to breed.



It isn't unusual to spot dolphins from the headland, and sometimes these curious creatures will come surprisingly close to swimmers as well.



Other marine life that is frequently seen at Cylinder Beach includes loggerhead and green turtles, eagle rays, and manta rays. If you visit early in the morning, or during the evening, you may also be lucky enough to see eastern grey kangaroos around the headland.



Although Cylinder Beach is close enough to Brisbane for a day trip, Minjerribah Camping does operate an often busy, but well maintained, campsite here. To be safe, it is best to book before coming over. Bookings for the campsite can be made at this website . There are also public toilets, picnic shelters, BBQs, and a playground on the grass just off the beach and adjacent to the campground.



Transport options for getting to Cylinder Beach include bringing your own vehicle over on the barge operated by Stradbroke Ferries , or using public transport. If you choose to use public transport both Stradbroke Ferries and the Stradbroke Flyer operate water taxis that are met by the bus on the island. Buses also run between the ferry terminal on the mainland and Cleveland Train Station should you wish to take public transport from Brisbane City.
