Cycling with Moliere (Alceste à bicyclette) - Film Review

Any movie with Fabrice Luchini in it is fabulous cinematic grazing. Remember 'The Women on the 6th Floor' and 'In the House'?

In this flick,Serge (Luchini) plays a retired great actor, living as a recluse amid the windswept landscape of the lle de Re. He gets a visitor, a fellow actor( Lambert Wilson) currently enjoying the peak of his career as a TV heartthrob.

He tempts Serge to make a comeback with a production of Moliere's play, The Misanthrope. Before accepting, serge insists on seven days of rehearsals.

Well dear readers, will he agree? Will the duo of egocentric thespians survive their week of intense readings and occasional bike trips around the picturesque island?

The director ups the ante by chucking in a mysterious Italian divorcee (Maye Sansit) to percolate a delicious romantic frisson.

What this generates is a soupcon of brilliant acting, in fact, a take on the classic play itself, which deals with French manners.

Fabrici Luchini has created a modern take on Molier's misanthropic character that is brilliant, inspiring, fascinating and above all, entertaining.

This is movie craft at its best.
