Sun 26 Nov 2017

It's January, the sun's up, and the city is full of cyclists watching or partaking in the annual Tour Down Under. You've looked at a few of them, and guessed that it can't be that difficult to ride a bike with them. Well guess what, you are right, and BikeSA are here to help you get started with their 2017 season of great recreational rides, with something for everyone.

**Grand Slam (19 February, 19 March, 4 June, 20 August, 8 October)
**
Anchoring the recreational cycling series is the Grand Slam series, a multi-date event that comprises 5 rides in 4 seasons in the Adelaide Hills and the Fleurieu Peninsula. Each ride consists of two loops with a stop halfway for refreshments and food, and each ride gradually gets longer as the season extends culminating in the final ride of 2x 100km loops from Balhannah.

Coast to Coast (2 April)

SA's iconic recreational ride takes riders from along a route from Glenelg to Victor Harbor in what is known as the best ride in South Australia. With a number of different starts and distances on offer, including a 10km family ride on the Encounter Bikeway , the fully supported Coast to Coast caters for riders of all skills and experience

Easter Cycle (14 - 17 April)

The annual Easter Cycle is the ideal long weekend of relaxed fun for family and friends, and this year it is in the mid-North at Jamestown alongside the long distance Mawson Trail . From long day-trips chasing the horizon for committed roadies, to little loops for tackers on trainer-wheels as well as the famous Night Ride, the Easter Cycle has plenty in the schedule to keep the entire family occupied all long weekend.

Dirty Weekend (29 - 30 April)

Most of BikeSA's events cater for those with the thinner wheels with the exception of one. The Dirty Weekend in late April is the chance for all of those with fat tyres to get them out of the shed, and head up to Cudlee Creek for 6, 12 or 24 hours of fun through the single tracks and the forest, with and without lights, as individuals or as teams.

Outback Odyssey (6 - 21 May)

Held every two years, the Outback Odyssey is a once in a lifetime chance to enjoy 16 days of freedom on your bike as you ride from Adelaide to Blinman along the iconic Mawson Trail . With starts also available at Burra and Melrose, the Odyssey has several distances and terrains to choose from as you ride through the heartlands of South Australia.

Melrose Fat Tyre Festival (9 - 12 June)

Not strictly a BikeSA event, the Fat Tyre Festival has been a significant feature on the SA cycling calendar for over a decade. This family friendly weekend features gentle off-road rides for the whole family, as well as some of the best single track riding in SA for those with a bit more courage.

Wine, Wheels and Whiting (8 - 10 September)

South Australia is well known for its gorgeous vineyards, great seafood and strong cycling culture, and BikeSA will bring all of this together in the Wine, Wheels and Whiting bike ride, where riders can pedal from the Clare Valley to the Copper Coast, and be entertained by a weekend of festivities put on by the locals.

Ride2Work Day (18 October)

Sitting in the middle of October is the Ride2Work Day , a national initiative designed to encourage and support all riders to take those first steps towards riding to work. From 7am for 2 hours, Victoria Square (and some regional centres) becomes a sea of bikes as riders gather for numerous learnings and free giveaways including coffee, scrolls and BikeSA safety equipment.

Annual Tour (14 - 22 October)

BikeSA's Annual Tour for those roadies looking to escape it all takes in South Australia's Lower Lakes and the Coorong. This 9 day ride sounds challenging but when someone is taking your baggage from site to site, and arranging some great meals and wines, it makes it all worthwhile.

Fleurieu Fondo (5 November)

Formerly known as Amy's Ride, the Fleurieu Fondo is the one day complete cycling festival centred around the the beautiful vineyards at McLaren Vale. For some, the traditional 35 / 60 / 100 or 120 km options from Flinders University along the Southern Expressway are un-missable, while for others the chance to ride some of the sweetest gravel trails in the region may entice, or maybe it is a chance to try cyclocross for the first time. Whatever your fancy, why not make a family day of it amongst the vineyards, cafes and live music, and enjoy yourself with hundreds of other like-minded cyclists.

Gear Up Girl (26 November)

The year culminates in Adelaide's only ladies event where ladies of all ages are encouraged to get on a bike and ride along the river, to the beach or to the hills. Gear Up Girl is now in its 6th year, and with a general theme of bikes, beach and bubbles, it has become a hugely popular ride on the BikeSA calendar.

Every BikeSA event has a team of volunteers helping organise everything so all you have to do is ride. Food, drinks, signage, recovery vehicles and cameras are provided, while a glass of wine at the end of a day's ride has been occasionally spotted. Entry details and prices are all available from the above links or from the BikeSA website or their facebook page . Let's get riding!
