Throughout Whyalla, you'll find creative public art pieces in various locations around town. One such artwork is Cuttlefish Craig located at the entrance to the unique circular jetty on Buttlingarra Way.

This unusual sculpture was created by artist Karen Carr with the help of the community. It is bright and colourful and serves as a mosaic cuttlefish seat. It pays homage to the Australian Giant Cuttlefish who arrives in the crystal clear waters along the northern coastline each year to spawn.

Unlike human's red iron-based blood, these cuttlefish have green-blue copper-based blood. They also have three hearts and their W-shaped eyes can see both forwards and backwards at the same time. Although colourblind, they display amazing colours to attract a mate. Besides the cuttlefish, Karen has also featured the blue swimmer crab, bottle-nose dolphin, shore crab and snapper within the whole installation.

The accessible cuttlefish throne, as some calls it, won the Australian Street Art Awards in 2021. It was recognised as the best landmark sculpture in the country. So, be sure not to miss it next time you're in the Eyre Peninsula.

It so aptly reflects the natural environment. The perfect artistic touch to the area.
