While the novelty of cupcakes in America has worn off, Australia is still heady about the dainty small cake. This pop culture trend in the culinary world is still spawning bakeries devoted entirely to them especially in Sydney and Melbourne .



Such is the story behind Cupcake Central, one of Melbourne's new darlings in Melbourne Central. It was inspired by a sweet vanilla cupcake in the infamous Magnolia Bakery in New York . After loads of passion and perspiration, the business has taken off with 3 stores opened in 3 years.



The shop in Melbourne Central offers delicious looking cupcakes delivered by friendly service and consumed in an open plan space that is as contemporary as the flavours.

There are more than 20 flavours and a calender spells out which are available from the bakery each day of the week. The company prides itself on baking all the cupcakes fresh each day.



My afternoon treat arrived in short time. I wasn't expecting much of the coffee. Surprising the latte arrived with a rich aroma and defined rosetta. While the coffee was weaker compared to my usual brew from Market Lane , it was still a satisfying brew.



I'm not a fan of cakes, especially the dry and overly sweet ones. The Red Velvet cupcake was moist to the bite. The swirl was buttery and not too sweet. Kudos to the bakers.



While $4 for a small cake seems pricey, the taste makes every cent worthwhile. A latte and cupcake later, I will return for another treat.
