If you're looking to escape over the Melbourne Cup weekend, read on. Why not enjoy a relaxing time in the serenity of the Dandenong Ranges? Here's a list of places and events which will keep you entertained:

Montrose Community Playground
Mt. Dandenong Tourist Rd, Montrose

If you've got kids in the car and need to stop on the way, visit the Montrose Community Playground. There are many different activities including swings, climbing frames and playhouses. Stunning bush murals, painted by local community members, decorate the playground. It's also right near Hahndorf's Chocolate Shop if you need a sweet treat.

Cup Day Fair
Cnr of Falls and Mt. Dandenong Tourist Rd, Mt. Dandenong

St. Michaels Anglican Church in Kalorama hold their annual Cup Day Fair on Tuesday the 6th of November between 9am and 1pm. It's the perfect opportunity to find a treasure at the White Elephant Stall, take part in the silent auction and top up on your supply of jams and relishes.

Burkes Lookout
Kyeema, Track, Mt. Dandenong

If you enjoy short walks and amazing views you need to head to Burkes Lookout otherwise known as Poor Man's Sky High. It's the perfect place for a picnic and wildlife spotting.

R J Hamer Arboretum
Mathias Road, Olinda

The R J Hamer Arboretum hosts over 150 species of native and exotic plants. It's the perfect place for a quiet stroll on one of the many walking tracks. There are wonderful views out across the Yarra Valley. Dogs are allowed.

Mountains of Books Bookfair
Hilton Rd, Ferny Creek

On the 3rd and 4th of November Mountains of Books, the annual book festival, will be held at the Ferny Creek Hall opposite Sherbrooke Forest. Hundreds of rare, used and out of print books will be on sale. Coffee, tea and snacks will also be available.

This is just a small sample of the fun which can be had in the Dandenongs, so jump in the car and head up there.
