Always love shopping at Big W Cumberland Park store, with easy car-parking and Woolworths supermarket next door, it's very convenient with everything I need at one location. The Garden Centre is a bonus, with both stores stocking a range of products at competitive prices.
However, in the new year going about my normal grocery shopping routine, I turned up at Woolworths to find the store in darkness and closed for business. I assumed the store may be stocktaking to re-open in a few days, as Big W next door was still trading, but this wasn't so.
A week later I returned to find the supermarket still closed, and baffled I popped into Big W next door to ask why. An enthusiastic staff member informed me that Woolworths will be closed for most of the year, but Big W would still trade while a major redevelopment of the entire complex took place.
Six months on I'm still shopping at nearby supermarkets, frustrated with car-parking, and trying to avoid the mayhem during busy times. Switching brands I've grown accustomed to has been difficult, and I miss the customer service relationship I had with staff at Woolworths.
So when is my local supermarket reopening its doors again? I tracked down Matt Holland, Senior Regional Property Manager for Woolworths looking for answers. Holland said they wanted to improve the Woolworths at Cumberland Park, and bring it into line with other stores around Adelaide. While it was convenient, the size of the store was small, which meant a limited range could only be stocked when compared to others.

The Woolworths store measured 2,200 square metres, and the floor area will be expanded to nearly double, at 4,200 square metres. A large basement will be built with around 170 car-parks, with easy trolley and lift access to the store.
Big W will undergo a major facelift in line with its latest design standards, giving it a fresh new look. The store will appeal to all demographics stocking a diverse range of products.

Don't be fooled , the "new" complex may look fine but at a cost. The garden centre will be no more. Clearly there has been NO consultation with the so called customers(how would we know what we want???) I wrote a customer complaint letter(as supplied by Woolworths) and requested a reply, but none has been forthcoming, again showing the lack of care about the customer. It makes me wonder if they have forgotten that without the customer there is no Big W or Woolworths !
Thank you !!! I was wondering when woolworths would open, I moved to the area partly because i cant drive and I could easily walk to this shopping centre for my weekly shopping, but still be in a nice area close to transport, city etc. Two weeks after I had moved in, woolworths closed to my dismay. I have also been struggling with near by shopping centres which do not have easy transport access. Been a real pain, I can't wait for this new woolworths to open! It's now October and still doesn't look like it'll be opening anytime soon.
I pray they don't take away the garden centre as that was the best in Adelaide ! Would be a truly bad mistake if they don't re-establish it :(
We too were very disappointed to discover that the Garden Centre has gone from Big W at Cumberland Park. That was very convenient for us, now we will have to travel to Bunnings or Mitre 10 for our small garden purchases - hardly worth it. I agree that customers should have been consulted before removing the garden centre. Also the entry has not been planned very well because when you walk in you tend to walk straight into the self-serve checkout areas. If it hadn't been for the friendly staff member who called out to us and pointed out that the main store entry was further along, we wouldn't have known. But overall the Big W store is better laid out than before, just a pity about the garden centre and the entrance.
Mitre 10, it's not a one minute drive down the road. Could walk in less than 5 minutes. Would be great opportunity to support small business rather than a company trying to have a manolopy on business.
Hi Ellen, I have not had much luck with management returning my calls let alone emails. Was in BigW the other day and left my card waiting for the manager to return my call so I could update readers - still no reply. I now go to the garden centre at K- Mart Kurralta Park as they have got rid of the garden centre at Big W. I also shop at Coles Kurralta Park. As an earlier reader commented on this post, it's not about the customers it's about the money.
Hi, I popped into Big W today and Woolworths will open its doors tomorrow!!! I thought I'd get a message to let me know but to no avail - I was promised a tour before it opened so I can let customers know. I guess the wait is finally over! :)
