If you find yourself along the busy area of Scarborough Beach Road in Mt. Hawthorn and feel like having a cup of coffee or a bite to eat, where do you go? Have you heard or tried the Cultural Tastes at 167 Scarborough Beach Road yet? At first glance, one might probably mistake it for a stationery shop because of the display of greeting cards at the entrance. However, the menu boards clearly indicate the selection of food and drinks available daily. Cultural Tastes is actually a café/bookshop where you can find variety of books on travel, culture, and food. But this is just a secondary function of the shop. Its pride lies mainly on its delicious and gourmet food using fresh ingredients, and vegetarian and gluten-free option food choice.

So, my friend and I visited the place to try the meal at Cultural Tastes. We were greeted by courteous staff and a friendly restaurant owner.

Not only did we get the taste of the café's speciality, but we also discovered a very cosy and relaxing place to dine. Cultural Tastes has a garden area at the back of the shop where, although not exactly near the beach, one can still feel the sea breeze. The garden area gives a rural ambiance from bamboo sticks-covered fence and surrounding trees that provide a good shade from the sun. For a moment, it did not feel like we were in the business area of Mt. Hawthorn. And although the beeping sounds of the cars spoiled the tranquil setting, it was still a pleasant afternoon experience.
To quench our thirst, we were first served with fresh pear & mint juice and fresh carrot & orange juice. It was very refreshing.

For the main meal, I had Asian chicken salad. The salad has marinated free-range chicken, organic soba noodles and julienne Asian veggies. It is flavoured with lime and coriander ginger dressing and mixed with toasted cashews. The presentation is quite impressive and the serving is more than enough for one person. One order of Asian chicken salad costs $15.90.

My friend had a chicken burger with home-made chunky chips on the side. The burger was made of free-range chicken that was marinated and chargrilled to perfection. Inserted in a Turkish bun, extras include fresh lettuce, Spanish onion, and homemade tomato relish and aioli. The price for chicken burger is $12.00 and for the home-made chunky chips is $ 4.50.

The lovely afternoon would not be complete without coffee and mouth-watering dessert. We had flat white and long black with chocolate-almond cake. Good coffee and yummy cake! Definitely not to be missed after a nice meal.
