It's rare that a wide range of artistic and creative elements come together almost perfectly, but that is what has been accomplished with Cult Fiction. Not only does this performance showcase a wide range of talents, it does it within a theme that takes the audience enjoyment to the next level.
Cult Fiction is a tribute to everything that is good and bad about pulp cinema. The sort of movies that sought to titillate and offer cheap thrills. The sort of movie that generations of young lovers enjoyed and became a part of the history of their youth. That all comes back when Cult Fiction hits the stage.
The list of performers is extensive, and they are all at the top of their game. The show opens and closes with the simply wonderful Les Sataniques Go-Go Troupe, and they set the scene perfectly for what is to come. The other acts include burlesque, fire artists, and a breath-taking aerial display. A highlight is a very moving rendition of one of the best-known movie speeches (I'll keep the origin secret), and it works well within the overall theme – all very ably supported by a perfectly edited audio-visual backdrop. This show manages to trigger memories and emotions that will be familiar to some, and probably inspire others to find out more about Grindhouse movies.
The Empyrean Function Centre is certainly one of the more comfortable venues at this year's Fringe Festival, and even though I think the performers would have preferred a larger stage, it's a comfortable place from which to watch the show.
