If you're tired of heading down to the cinema and finding that the only films showing feature Jennifer Aniston as an adorable but unlucky in love florist, Jason Statham as a tough-talking gangster, and Angelina Jolie as a beautiful and mysterious spy, fear not - there is an alternative.
The Globe Theatre is a licensed venue that offers movies a la Fortitude Valley - that is, cult, B-grade, indie, and classic movies (among others), all at bargain prices. The venue is managed and operated by not-for-profit arts group Odyssey, whose mission is to bring diverse, different entertainment to Brisbanites and nurture and promote creative types.
For an idea of the diversity of the films showing, the March Cult Cinema program included Beatles movies to The Dark Crystal and The Goonies to Eraserhead. Check out the program to see what's coming up. The movies are often presented as themed doubles or movie marathons and the cinema has a licensed snack bar, so you can grab a drink, relax, and make a night of it.
And here's the best part. If you thought cheap Tuesday at a mainstream cinema was a bargain, this place takes value to a new level: simply pay $10 for an Odyssey Fanclub membership, and you get free entry to all Cult Cinema events for an entire year. Or just show up to an event: most cinema events include a year's membership in the ticket price.
The Globe is located right next door to the Valley train station and is only a short walk from the mall. As well as cinema, it also hosts extensive live music, special events, and all-ages showings that you can bring the kiddies to.
