Feeling peckish after a coffee at Gino's on "Cappuccino Strip" I headed straight to another local "great eat" recommendation. Cully's Tea Rooms has been serving Freo for over 80 years with a wide variety of baked treats. A popular eatery for value-for-money brekkie in Freo, I was visiting this Freo institution for its mouth-watering pies.

Ideally located in a high-traffic shopping street opposite a mall, Cully's was easy to find. Its narrow entrance and queue of customers made manoeuvring towards the display of baked goodies slightly difficult.

Despite the name, this establishment was more of a continental coffee shop plus bakery, with some old world European decor. There was nothing British tea room about it including the use of tea bags instead of leaves.

I finally made it to the counter where I received service with a smile and patience with questions about the pies. I decided on the Pepper Steak Pie.

Although there is seating inside but I felt the pie should be best enjoyed in one of the many public areas under a shady tree. A great spot would be the esplanade with the Ferris wheel , or just by the harbour where seafood eateries Kailis' and Cicerello's are located. Perhaps a coffee at Hush Espresso afterwards.

With a hot pie in hand, I just couldn't wait and took a bite. The crust was puff crispy and the contents were a thick peppery gravy filled with good size pieces of tender beef. Definitely one of the better pies I've had around Australia.

I can't comment on the breads and cakes but with a delicious Pepper Steak Pie and warm service, Cully's is worth the visit if you're in Freo.
