The word 'Cuckoo' can mean a bit crazy but this quirky and highly amusing german buffet style restaurant located at 508 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, Olinda is pardon the pun - Cuc-koo.

This place offers a massive self serve smorgasbord. Beginning with soup of the day (potato and leek when I went) in the biggest bowl I have ever seen soup in, with a side of bread and butter. Make sure you order your drinks immediately, as they may take a while to arrive, it's that busy. The big jugs of beer are a must and then you just go for it. Grab a plate and help yourself to as much or as little as you want.

There is a range of fresh seafood including tigers prawns, which you must clean yourself. I like to think that with this on offer, a bowl of lemon water would be on hand, but to no avail. Main meal buffet includes roasts, vegetarian dishes, other meat dishes, as well as a full salad bar and fresh cold meat platters - all this to tempt the taste buds.

The dessert buffet includes cold desserts, fresh fruit salad and fruit platters, continental cakes and pastries. I seriously could not decide, since I have a sweet tooth, I literally helped myself to one, okay, may be two, of each. How else am I going to try them all.

It's $43.00 per head for adults and $21.50 for children (5-12yrs). Great value with all the food, entertainment and atmosphere. Oh and if it's your birthday, they will mention it during the show and get the crowd to sing to you. Fun.

Live entertainment is provided by a 2 piece band who look as old as the trees. Bless them. The host/entertainer encourages guests to join in a sing-a-long as well as bell ringing (In tune might I add). You just can't help but participate by clapping and cheering. I must admit, I was looking forward to some yodelling and the slap dance but not today. On occasion performing artists will perform these.

For a memory that will last a lifetime, a photographer will come around, 'say cheese', take your picture and find you later to show your happy snaps for $15.

Skip breakfast and have an all you can eat lunch, which will have, a no need for dinner effect. It's worth the drive.

Open for Lunch 7 days a week 11.30am - 3pm. Afternoon Tea Sat - Sun 3.30pm -5.30pm. Dinner Fri Sat Sun 6.30pm - 11.30pm. Bookings are essential and parking is on site.
