This conference focuses on crystallography and materials science as fundamental tools for the characterization and understanding of materials of different nature, including those relevant for the cultural heritage. The aims of science applied to CH include diagnostics, authentication, conservation, and interpretation of artefacts related to human past. Some invasive and non-invasive techniques applied to cultural heritage materials will be briefly described and some case studies will be discussed, including Eneolithic metal provenance and the strange case of Etruscan numerals.
