A walk in the park literally
Autumn in Brisbane is the perfect time to take the kids outside and wear them out. 'A big day' equates to a big sleep. Do you agree with this?

Crystal Waters Park in Thornlands is the perfect place for younger children to have a good run and play.

Firstly, the area is littered with tall gums that filter the sun's rays, taking the sting out of the heat.

Native vegetation abounds

The playground area is well away from the road. It consists of a fort like structure that is a great aid for imagination and play, a climbing net, and swings.

Great playground equipment

This parkland nestles alongside the Crystal Waters Lake, an environmental catchment area, so small children do need to be supervised.

This area abounds with ducks and Magpie Geese and many youngsters were having great fun feeding the water birds old bread. When the little ones negotiated the jetty that juts out over the water, there was much squealing and carrying on playing 'spot the turtle'. Swimming is prohibited.

Covered picnic tables provide respite from all the running and playing and I would most certainly recommend packing water and snacks to provide a picnic feel. Several walking tracks provide different access points and are easy to navigate. Many locals use these areas to exercise their dogs, though it is a leash area only.

There are no BBQ or toilet facilities in this area, though these are both available at the adjacent William Stewart Park.

Parking on Margery Street, Thornlands, is easy walking distance to the playground area and is an adventure itself walking over the spillway.

This is a great outing if you are looking for fresh air and the opportunity to exercise (read: run the kiddies ragged). Even if the kids don't sleep the night through, you just might.
