CRU is on Glenferrie Rd but up the Cotham Rd end. It's small but has a lot to offer, with service from friendly staff its trademark. The last time I went there I thought my companion must have known the waiter personally due to the smiling reception he was given.

The crew at Cru start early – 7AM on weekdays and 8AM on the weekend. Enjoy one of their coffees or stop for lunch in the sun-filled courtyard. Read the newspaper paper or drop in after work for some beverage advice from their resident 'wine guy' in the front bar. If you are looking for something special, why not order dinner in their Private Dining Room or host your next function at Cru.

I have been meaning to review Cru for a long time having been there for numerous hot chocolates and a few lunches. I like this indulgent beverage - really hot and strong. The Cru team didn't blink an eye when I was very particular. They serve bottomless mineral water for just $5. I don't think they made any money on me and my friend as we talked for hours over the non-alcoholic bubbly.

The staff at Cru are very obliging. My friend ordered a side serve of scrambled eggs with her salad and although it seems unusual, it was delivered as requested with a smile.

I have really enjoyed the salads there. They don't look big in the pictures, but they were filling enough. They are served with very fresh ingredients and delicious dressings. The stand out for me was the salmon and avocado smash salad ($17). The prices are reasonable compared to what you might expect at any Kew café. For example, some inexpensive items such as muffins and sweets for $4.50 and scones, jam and cream (just $4).

For something a bit more substantial try the zucchini and corn fritters (17). A fried calamari salad is a very reasonable ($18) and so is the falafel wrap for only $14.

A large selection of bar food and smalls are served from 3pm. A full dinner menu is available at 6pm. If you're up for a Spring lamb roast for two you will pay $55.

Cru are after my heart. They pride themselves on their cheeses – my only vice!. You can order from their impressive selection, one cheese, ($12), three cheeses ($32) or six cheeses for $64. The serving size per cheese is approx. 30 gram. All cheese is served with Farmgate jam, fresh apple, balsamic pearls, house made lavosh and muscatels. bon appétit.
