There is something so precious about human kindness these days, the idea of treating your friends, family and neighbours with respect and politeness can go a long way to ease the heaviness of life. We are all having our own difficulties during Covid-19 and the way we are treated can definitely make or break our daily situations. On a beautifully kind note, my sister who is currently overseas in London provided me with a surprise gift card to the Cruelty Free Shop in Fitzroy so that I could treat myself to something nice. So armed with my $50 gift card, mask and sanitiser I made my way to this unique store and found ample parking thankfully, as it is located near the intersection of Johnston Street and Brunswick Road.

The Cruelty Free Shop is at first glance, a beautifully set out, timber-floored store with neat aisles of produce and a stack of delightfully cute baskets at the front entrance. You would think that this may just be a gorgeous yet regular local boutique mart, that is until you begin to read labels like porkless sweet and sour bites, vegan jerky, shitake mushroom crisps and even meatless meaty pies.

I know that some people may scrunch up their faces when one does mention vegan products but the quality of these items have come a long way such as the Impossible burger, creamy vegan cheese made in Victoria, chick'n nuggets and soft silky chocolate that melts in your mouth. These items have become so common within our supermarkets and restaurants but to walk into a store completely filled with vegan and gluten-free products is a sight to see and a must for the explorer.

This haven of vegan and gluten-free goodies is a great spot to visit not only for those interested in a cruelty-free lifestyle but those looking to jazz up their weekly meals or to choose a snack that is a little bit different but packed with flavour. While browsing the aisles, it was incredibly difficult not to load up my basket with all the naughty treats, but I believe I came up with some interesting items to take home with the assistance of the friendly staff members working there.

I found my favourite gluten-free Worcestershire sauce (a must-have), Toffuti cream cheese, vegan chocolate spread (eaten by the spoonful of course) and vegan custard. I also managed to find a mint chocolate similar to Nestle Aero, a vegan satay sauce for my evening stir-fries, Remedy Kombucha (a must-try), vegan chicken pies and Thai green curry with jackfruit. Jackfruit can be used as a meat substitute and when cooked with sauces like Thai green curry or slow roasted with BBQ sauce offers up a soft pull-apart texture that is quite similar to beef or chicken.

You will also find a variety of cleaning products, beauty products, cookbooks and clothing items that are also based around cruelty free living.

Make sure you come down and check out this unique store in Melbourne at 385 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy or if you are in Sydney you can head to 83 Glebe Point Road, Glebe. Anywhere else or the shop is not within your 5km radius? There's always online athttps://www.crueltyfreeshop.com.au.

The plant-based revolution is here to stay so why not try something a little different.
