Of all the elements that make a film, music might be the most integral in taking a story from entertaining to timeless. Don’t believe it? Try watching a horror movie on mute. Jaws doesn’t feel quite so threatening without the iconic “ba-DUM” underscoring its narrative.

This is why, when given the opportunity to experience a legendary film score in a new way, you have to take it. With Symphonic Cinema presenting Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in the stunning surrounds of Hamer Hall this August, you can be sure that this will be a cinematic experience like no other.

Renowned composer Tan Dun’s musical score will be performed live to director Ang Lee’s masterpiece. Not only will audiences be treated to one of the most ground-breaking martial arts films of all time performed by the Green Destiny Orchestra, but they will also be able to enjoy featured cellist Tina Guo. Known for her unique genre-crossing style, Guo can be heard on hundreds of blockbuster film, television and game soundtracks including Wonder Woman. With recent credits including DUNE 2 and a tour with Hans Zimmer, Guo is a key player in contemporary film scoring.

If you’ve never seen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon before, seeing this spectacular film on the big screen with a live orchestra is the perfect introduction. Set against the breathtaking landscapes of ancient China, it tells the story of the legendary master warrior Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) and his secret love Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh), with whom he has entrusted the safekeeping of a mythic sword known as the Green Destiny.

This film made a splash when it was released in 2000, and was nominated for ten Oscars, winning Best Foreign Language Film, Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography as well as Best Score.
Don’t miss out on this unique cinephile’s experience.
