Just recently, my darling wife and I found what can only be described as, 'Heaven on Earth'. The Cross Country Cottage situated at 221 Old Mount Beepo Road, Toogoolawah is the site of this piece of true paradise.
About an hour and a half from Brisbane (a smidgen further from our wondrous Redlands), Cross Country Cottage is large, well-appointed and placed on top of a hill where you can see forever in all directions. It comfortably accommodates six guests sharing the two bedrooms and one bath. A timber cot and high chair are available on request.
To make sure you have sufficient time to take in all the scenery, peace and serenity bookings must be for a minimum of two nights. Tariff per night is $110 plus $20 for each additional guest i.e., for two it's $130, for three $150 and so on.
Everybody gets a warm welcome at Cross Country
We were gob-smacked by the luscious 200-hectare cattle and horse stud smack-dab in the most beautiful countryside within the Brisbane Valley and just three kilometres from Toogoolawah. For those of us (me not included) who enjoy life's more rugged pursuits, the Cottage is perched strategically in the middle of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail(BVRT). If you are keen on doing the BVRT on bicycle, horseback or by foot but couldn't work out how to do the whole distance at your own pace or with a group of friends, then the Cross Country Cottage is the perfect spot to break your trek and enjoy some downtime.
De-stress and chill the nerves with assistance from the owners' cattle and horses who will join you in your relaxation by grazing peacefully in the nearby paddocks. Or if that all sounds a little too tranquil for your likes, then you'll find some action at the nearby Ramblers Skydiving Centre, Watts Bridge Memorial Airfield, the Somerset Dam and many more.
Believe me, the country-side is spectacular but it is not the whole deal. Cross Country Cottage itself is really lovely. It's big, comfortable and set up to provide everything you are likely to need. All on one level, the Cottage is about 50 metres from the owner's home and comes equipped with coffee maker, air conditioning, pots and pans, dishes and silverware, oil, salt and pepper.
Comfort and convienence
There is a fully functional kitchen where you are able to cook your own meals on the stove, in the oven or the microwave. A fridge will keep all your provisions (especially the bottled ones) chilled and fresh during your stay.
The two bedrooms are fully fitted with plenty of bed linens, sheets, extra pillows and plenty of blankets for a comfortable night's sleep. Likewise, in the bathroom, along with the hair dryer, you'll find ample amounts of soap, shampoo, towels and toilet paper.
It doesn't matter where you lie on the spectrum of life's activities. If you're like me and sit at one extreme where being able to relax and take in the peace and serenity of complete non-activity or you're at the opposite end, where you have to be doing nerve-tingling things like jumping out of a perfectly good aeroplane is your thing, then Cross Country Cottage is the place. No matter what your preference, the views, the immediate surroundings, the Cottage, the hosts, the livestock, the nearby activities, horse or bike riding the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, you name - it it's all there for you to enjoy.
I can't say enough about this wonderful place. Try it and get your fill of whatever your heart desires.
