The latest dessert trending around the world finally hits Brisbane.

Forget macarons, forget FROYO and "don't even entertain the notion that cupcakes made it as a legitimate fad down under," says a dear friend who works in the food biz, "they weren't even ironically cool".

Wow. News to me. Egg on my face, where the metaphoric egg is actually red velvet cupcake icing.

Fusing the crunchy, buttery layers of a croissant with the glaze and cream-filling of a donut, the Cronutâ„¢ was first engineered by award-winning Pastry Chef Dominque Ansel and launched in May 2013. Since then, queues have been forming before 6am outside Ansel's eponymous bakery in New York City. Because only 500 are baked daily, with a limit of two per person, scalpers have been known to offer one Cronutâ„¢ at up to ten times the retail value.



For reasons of personal integrity, I cannot will myself to type the little TM after the cronut again. Yes, I will concede that my first few bites of a chocolate cronut were like pecks on the cheek from Michael Fassbender (left cheek) and Jesus (right cheek). However, I fear that honouring a fad dessert with a favourable review as well as a grammatical knighthood might diminish my credibility as an author and social critic.

So, where can one purchase and sample such a treat that forces one to ask these soul-searching questions? Flour & Chocolate situated in Morningside is the only artisan bakery to offer this international baked good celebrity to us humble Brisbanians. Owners Lachlan and Kylie Scott give a nod to the inventor by naming their reproduction the DA Cronut. Whilst I cannot compare this local offering to the original manufacture, I announce with flailing arms that Flour & Chocolate produce a victoriously tasty treat.



Varieties include chocolate ganache, salted caramel, cinnamon sugar as well as alternating flavours lemon custard and Mars Bar Tribute. Pop in early morning to guarantee your favourite cronut. Flour & Chocolate also bakes the highest quality bagels, brownies, quiches, fruit danish pastries and *ahem* cupcakes too.
