Planning a day out in Daylesford? Twenty-three kilometres away is
, producing everything from blankets to clothing to boots, all made from Australian natural fibres. The coloured spinning mill is the only one of its type currently operating in Australia. Located at Creswick, a small town approximately 120 kilometres from Melbourne between Ballarat and Daylesford, the Mill specialises in the production of
alpaca and
wool fibres. This is very much a family business, founded in 1947 by Polish emigrant, Paul Ryzowy, and run today by his grandchildren.
The recently extended factory outlet at Creswick is full of Australian-made, natural-fibre clothing, footwear and bedding, and is divided down the centre by a long, plaid runner. Even when you have walked to the end of the runner and are returning to the front of the shop, you will see something that you missed on the way down. Beyond the products on the right-hand side are viewing windows where you can watch the spinning process from start to finish. There is a cafe area to enjoy a cup of coffee as well as
The Ryzowy Gallery, which exhibits the works of local artists on a rotating basis. Outlets for goods produced by are also located at
Hawthorn,
Elsternwick and
Beechworth in Victoria.
hosts events such as regular times during school holidays for meeting and feeding the
alpacas, on the viewing deck at the Mill. The annual
Creswick Fleece Show is held in early March.
