My night at Crescent Head Country Club was off to a bad start when I arrived without my driver's licence. I was required to produce it to prove I was from out of town and didn't need to sign up for a membership to eat there. I ended up having to trudge back up a hill to my rental property to retrieve it.
Once I finally made it inside (and after some deliberations) I decided I would have the Rump Steak (500g) for $22.00. While waiting for it to be cooked, I looked around and noticed that there was a lot of uneaten food on the plates of diners who seemed to have finished their meals. However, I could also see full plates that had just been served. It seemed the food wasn't bad, you just got a lot of it here. Few kids could eat everything served in one of those kids' meals.
I visited on the night of the Under Age Disco, so there was a lot of music and the place was pretty busy, particularly with families. This kind of crowd is apparently normal in the holidays. Out the window, you have a view of the golf course. It slopes upwards so you can see it no matter where you're seated. Closer to the windows, you can see the lawn bowls area too.
My group had ordered in two lots (those who had brought their driver's licence and those who hadn't, and still had to choose their meal when they sat down). When the first lot had finished their meals, the rest of us were still waiting for ours. It seemed to take a long time to be ready.
It took so long, in fact, that one of my companions went to inquire when we would be able to eat (on our last holiday dinner out, our order wasn't even started till we made a similar inquiry, so there was a hint of concern about whether anything was happening at this point). We were told that it was my meal to blame - the meat wasn't done yet.
When it finally was ready, the problem was revealed. I had asked for 'medium to well done' steak and seen 'well done' written down when the order was being taken, but when I was handed my plate I was told I was getting a 'very well done' steak. I guess we now knew why it had taken an unexpected length of time to be cooked. However, despite not giving me what I ordered, the cooks had definitely been determined to cook it to the exact level they thought I wanted it.
Ultimately, I enjoyed my meal, as I happen to like my steak very well done. The food was pretty basic. A steak on a bed of chips. Nothing more. If I wanted sauce I had to go get it myself. Nevertheless, like my other companions, I cleared the plate, unlike many of the other guests.
