This event is a discussion series based on Duldig Studio's current exhibition - SLAWA. Creative professionals will be discussing different design elements featured in the exhibition including textile, furniture, and product design amongst other things.



It will be held at the Duldig Studio in East Malvern. Duldig Studio is best known as a private museum located in the former residence of artists Karl Duldig and his wife, Slawa Horowitz-Duldig. Their story is a fascinating one - as both refugees and artists. Karl and Slawa were both originally born in Poland and their respective families moved to Vienna, Austria before the outbreak of the first world war. They met when they were both private students of the Austrian sculptor, Anton Hanak.

Married in 1929, they were living and working in Singapore when the second world war started and as such, were designated 'enemy aliens'. They were sent to an internment camp in Tatura, Australia where they lived with their daughter, Eva, for several years. Amongst items exhibited at the house are letters that Karl Duldig wrote to the Australian government to request their release from the camp.

Both artists continued to work on their own pieces and also became teachers at Melbourne schools. Today, you can see original furniture, imported from their home in Vienna, paraphernalia related to their journey to Australia, their original artist studios and also, many of their artworks.

"For the first time an exhibition by the Austrian-Australian artist, Slawa Horowitz-Duldig (1901-1975), will be shown in the home she shared with husband sculptor Karl Duldig - now a house museum. Presenting her early graphic works and sculptures, remarkable survivors of war and dislocation, the exhibition gives insight into Viennese art of the early modernist period. Follow SLAWA's story – told through her drawings, sculptures, fashion and furniture design, and her ingenious invention of the folding umbrella."


showcases the art and design of a remarkable artist, designer and teacher Slawa Horowitz-Duldig. Each talk will focus on a particular element of Slawa's work. The next in the series is Textile Design on the 11th of November 2017.

Each talk will be from 2pm - 4pm at the Duldig Studio at 92 Burke Road, East Malvern. Adults are $20, $15 for members and $12 for concession/students. Refreshments are included.
