There are many great activities out there for kids and at WeekendNotes we try to find the best of them and are always on the lookout for great free events.

But the reality is that a lot of creative activities do cost money and not all parents are in a position to provide their kids with such experiences, especially with the rising cost of living.

So it is a great initiative that the NSW Government is helping kids get creative with the new Creative Kids program. If you are a parent, guardian or carer, you can apply for a voucher with a value of up to $100 per calendar year for each of the children in your care aged 4.5 to 18 years still enrolled in school.

The voucher may be used with a registered activity provider for registration, participation and tuition costs for a number of activities. There is quite a spectrum but keep in mind that you will need to do the activities through a registered provider. Here are some of the activities on the list.

Visual arts

  • Drawing
  • Photography
  • Sculpture
  • Sketching
  • Painting
  • Printmaking
  • Advertising
  • Public art
  • Screen
  • Media arts
  • Design
  • Multimedia
  • Craft

  • Creative industries

  • Architecture
  • Coding
  • Industrial design
  • Game design
  • Augmented/virtual reality
  • Graphic design
  • Fashion design
  • Radio

  • Literary and linguistics arts

  • Creative writing
  • Languages
  • Publishing
  • Public speaking
  • Poetry

  • Performing arts

  • Music
  • Drama
  • Singing
  • Circus arts
  • Creative expression
  • Choreography
  • Synchronised swimming
  • Parkour
  • Theatre
  • Dance

  • The voucher can be used at any time during the calendar year it is issued.

Of course, you do need to be:

  • a NSW resident
  • your child needs to be enrolled in school (from Kindergarten to Year 12, including those who are home-schooled or enrolled in secondary school education at TAFE NSW)
  • and you need to be a current Medicare cardholder with your children listed.

  • Eligible activities are structured creative and cultural lessons. They can involve tutoring (but remember the list of activities above) and they can be virtual (delivered by technology as long as they are live and interactive) which is great for those that rely on distance education. But, you cannot use the voucher for a one-off tutoring session.

If parents think this through there are likely to be some great activities your child can do. It might be an outside school hours class, a weekend course, or a cultural experience such as a performance followed by a master class.

The activities cannot be school run. In fact, NSW public, private and Catholic schools are all ineligible providers.

    Getting the voucher

To do this you must set up a MyServiceNSW account. You will need to have your Medicare card with your child's details in front of you to do this.

So you apply for the voucher here

Find approved Creative Kids providers. These are listed online here. If you can't find your preferred provider, you can ask them to register as a Creative Kids provider.

To use the voucher, give the details to your registered activity provider.

But no chopping and changing. You can't spend some of the money on one thing and then use the balance on another.

The program runs year-round, so kids can get creative at any time.

Good luck with this. I think it is a great initiative. Not only because it will get kids engaged in creative pursuits, but because it will also encourage heaps of creative educational businesses to see how they can best provide for children and give families great value for their $100 vouchers. Shop around.

This new rebate is in addition to the Active Kids Rebate which has been in place for six months. Both rebates give parents $100 per school-aged child.

There are likely to be a number of questions about this great initiative. You are best to ring 13 77 88 or visit your local service centre [LINK=https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/service-centre]click here.
