Creative arts and local food & wine on the long weekend

Discover a new festival and what's cool at Contentious Character!

Creative Juices spills onto the cultural landscape at Contentious Character vineyard in winter 2021 over the long weekend, 11 - 14 June. A new arts, wine and food festival, Creative Juices celebrates the human connection to the land through creativity and with delightful local food and wine.

"It's been a rough year for our friends in the arts and this inaugural festival has been a dream of ours for some time. It seemed right to bring it on this year when the guys need it most," says Tony Mansfield.

Contentious Character has put together a juicy festival program, mixing up dance, drama and song with local food and wines and a creative line-up from our nation's capital and region, featuring performances by Australian Dance Party, Somebody's Aunt, Dianna Nixon, a kids workshop from Kulture Break, and a sparkling long table lunch with The Street Theatre Associate Artists. People joining in for Creative Juices over the long weekend can choose from events and go on a Festival binge!

Kicking off the festival on Friday night is Australian Dance Party, a collective of contemporary dance artists creating joyous and bold dance work in Canberra and beyond.

Led by award-winning artist Alison Plevey, three performances during the opening night and dinner are set to entertain including a social wine/line dance to get festival-goers up dancing.

Kulture Break, an innovative organisation committed to youth empowerment through the performing arts, offers an engaging and inclusive hip hop workshop for children while parents enjoy a laid back lunch.

Saturday evening welcomes musician and performer Dianna Nixon and her new show, A Gentleman's Companion. Presented over two nights and inspired by the delicious words of Charles Baker's collected concoctions for imbibing and degusting, Ready to rumble, soar and cry with festival-goers, Dianna is inviting singles to her table.

Juice, created by Canberra's audacious ensemble Somebody's Aunt, led by Jane Ingall, with musicians Nitya Bernard Parker and Andrew Purdam, is performed on Sunday at 11am and 2pm. Inspired by the land and the grapevines, Juice is filled with joy, pleasure and humour, and celebrates wine and the cycle of life.

Sparkling Perfect is a fitting end to Contentious Character's inaugural festival and celebrates all good things local at a long table lunch with regional chefs and winemakers from Lark Hill Winery, Enotria Wines and Affleck Wines and The Street Theatre Associate Artists.

In support of artists developing new theatre works and a strong and vibrant arts scene in our region, Contentious Character has selected The Street Theatre Associate Artists Program as the 2021 recipient of their newly-created annual arts fundraiser.

Contentious Character is a cool-climate vineyard, winery, cellar door and kitchen, set in the hills of Wamboin, 30km east of Canberra. Everything is designed by partners Jeremy Wilson, Ben Jarrett, Ross Appleton and Tony Mansfield to blend harmoniously with the natural landscape, from native timber boundaries to commanding views of the hills from restaurant windows. Locals, friends and visitors are welcomed and offered a genuinely charming Canberran version of the visitor's Australian experience
