It would be easy to be overshadowed by sport when your neighbour is the Brisbane Broncos Leagues Club, but a tiny house in Red Hill has cut a creative space in the heart of football territory. From an unassuming house in Red Hill, the Creative Glass Guild has been operating since 1979 when a group of hobbyists inspired by a visiting English glass artist, started the Guild, based on the traditions of original medieval craft guilds. I have often driven past this little house and wondered what the Glass Guild was all about.

Living amongst Queenslander homes and seeing their ornate, lead light windows has only added to this interest, so I decided to find out more. I discovered that the guild offers beginners and intermediate courses and workshops in Leadlight, Copperfoil, Mosaics, Fusing and Slumping, Beadmaking, Stained Glass, Sandblasting and Engraving, Lamp Making for those wanting to explore the skills and techniques of this craft. Courses vary between 4-10 weeks and prices vary depending on the courses. (The 2 day beginners glass beading course for example is $175 and includes all glass materials, instruction notes, glass rods and use of torch and tools). Enrolments can be made online at their website.

The Guild also hosts an annual exhibition of works, with the 2017 event to be held in July based on the theme "Literature". Tutors will be holding demonstrations and visitors can meet and talk to the artists about their art and this creative art form. For the person who has everything, gift vouchers are also available which can be redeemed for courses, coloured or clear glass, tools and more.

You can become a member for $95.00 for 12 months with fees contributing to the running costs of the Guild. Why not check out the Guilds' website for more information on upcoming events and classes.

My visit left me feeling inspired to create and with a new sense of enthusiasm to say "I could do that"
